Monetizing your blog successfully takes a lot of hard work, tons of planning, and plenty of patience for trial and error. However, with the right approach, you can set yourself up in a good position to make money from your blog.

Create content that’s useful

Your blog has no chance of making money if you don’t create content that people want. While the following monetization tips will create streams for getting money, none of them will matter if people don’t care about what you have to say in the first place. Make sure that your blog is filled with content that will benefit the reader’s life in some way.

Sell sponsored posts

Selling sponsored posts is a great option for bloggers who don’t want to crowd their website with unsightly ads. Plus, with sponsored posts, you retain control over the content on your website (normally, you don’t necessarily get to choose the ads that display there).

You can reach out to brands or they may start coming to you. You can also do a few freebie sponsored posts to showcase what you can do for brands. Put together a media kit which includes your website, social media and audience data to show potential sponsors.

Be sure that you make any sponsored links nofollow.

Signup for affiliate marketing

Affiliate marketing is one of the most traditional ways to monetize a blog.

You’ll recommend and promote products and services on your blog, and then if your audience members click the affiliate link (and make a purchase), you’ll get a portion of that sale.

It can take a while to make any real money this way, though, since your commission may be low, and if you don’t have some traffic coming to your blog yet. However, setting up affiliate links now can payoff later, as you gain more of a following and readers go back and read your older posts.

Aim to signup with companies you love and use when doing affiliate marketing. Be sure that they are also relevant to your niche.

Signup with an ad network.

Along with affiliate marketing, ad networks are another common avenue for generating income from your blog. Google AdSense is the one ad network that a lot of bloggers start out with. You’ll have a bit of control over what types of ads are run and where they’ll show up on your blog, but for the most part, the ads themselves are out of your hands.

Write reviews.

Reviews are similar to a sponsored post, but when it comes to reviews, honesty is important (and the brands should expect an honest review, even if that means it ends up being a negative one).

You’ll test out a product that you receive for free, then review it on your website. Of course, you want to only review products in your niche, because you’ll have more experience with similar products and your audience will actually be interested in reading the review. Just like with sponsored posts, you can reach out to brands, and some may end up coming directly to you.

Create a membership program.

While you’ll want to give some of your content away for free, since this is the easiest way to attract an audience, also consider creating a members-only program where people can signup for a monthly subscription to access premium content. You can also use this tactic to collect emails by hiding content behind a signup form. I recommend using Thrive leads for that.

Think about the type of content that people will want enough to pay for. Maybe you can offer a live Q&A session every week or put up premium content with highly actionable advice. You may want to offer free services, tools, a community area or coaching services as part of the membership, too.

Sell your services.

If you have services that you offer, or you feel that you could turn your interests, talents or skills into services that people will pay for, your blog can be used to attract clients. Your blog can also double as your portfolio, so when people find you, they can browse through the work you’ve done in the past and reach out to you if they feel you’re a good fit for their project.

Sell an e-book.

A dream that a lot of bloggers have is to create passive income, which means you create something once and sell it over and over. For many bloggers, this “something” is an e-book. Find out what your audience is most interested in, then create a guide to help them.

You can sell your e-book for a small amount, like 99 cents, or for up to $20, similar to the cost of a regular book. You can also sell mini e-books, online courses or e-guides to try out different ideas, then bundle them together for a higher price.

You can use your blog to promote your e-book, attract readers who are interested in the theme, and offer your freebie in order to build your mailing list (I suggest Convertkit – your freebie will entice people to signup for your newsletter, and then you can email them about your e-book and or online courses).

Making money from a blog is the dream that most bloggers share, but it’s only possible once you’ve setup a blog, started posting great content, and dedicated yourself to connecting with your audience. Remember, all the pieces of the puzzle have to be in place to run a great, money-generating blog.
