Everything starts in the mind. How you perceive things and building mental strength is no different. In fact, the difference between everyone else and those with mental strengths when hard times come is the way they look at it. When you practice these habits daily, you know what to expect and how to overcome all obstacles. You make better decisions, and get more out of life.

“Success is a function of persistence and doggedness and the willingness to work hard for twenty-two minutes to make sense of something that most people would give up on after thirty seconds.” Malcolm Gladwell

Never Accept Defeat

When things get tough you always have a choice. When you’re in the middle of it and are overwhelmed by your emotions it may not seem like it, but you do.

Putting in work in the start of a journey is easy if you simply start, but the real challenge comes when you are close to getting the thing you have been working years for. If you practice the habit of pushing through obstacles, it will be easier for you to do so in the future, same vice versa.

The closer you are towards the end the more drained you will feel, and want to quit. To develop strong habits you must never quit.

Trust Yourself

You must trust in the decisions you make, even if you have tried doing so before and it turned out bad and made things worst. The point of past failure is to learn from them and make better decisions for the future. You’ll know the right decision when you feel it deep inside. It feels like there couldn’t be a better choice. You can’t depend on others whenever you need to decide, you must make your own, and with practice you will learn to trust yourself and make sound decisions even when you are clueless.

Learn to master your Emotions

Emotions are still an unknown in many ways, but they can still be controlled to an extent. When you become overwhelmed and let your emotions run wild, it puts you at risk of making bad decision and ones you will regret.

To make good judgements, you need clarity. Successful entrepreneurs know, no matter how much control they have over their emotions they will slip up once in a while. rather than panicking, they step back and collect themselves avoiding bad judgment

Make Many Mistakes

People love an overnight story. It gives them something to talk about and criticize. Entrepreneurs of all people know well there is no such thing as an overnight story, but hard work of 16-20 hours, no sleep, no life, and little to no support.

Along with these rigorous work ethics is being able to grow tough skin. “I wonder how many times people laughed at those that are now highly successful. Called them names, because they failed, and made many mistakes?” Those that aim to please others will never make mistakes, but they will never get anywhere either.

Making mistakes is another form of learning. Build the habit of not caring what others think, and don’t be afraid to look stupid.

Delay Instant Gratification

If you can’t delay gratification, you will never have much in life. That’s why come tax season the streets are filled with new cars. People buy brand new flat screen televisions, rather than saving that money to one day multiply. They spend it as soon as it comes.

If you desire to have more out of life, you must have less to start and be ok with that for a while.

“If you will live like no one else, later you can live like no one else.” ― Dave Ramsey

Never Stoop To Other Peoples Levels

“Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” ― Mark Twain

I learned long ago, never to wrestle with a pig. You get dirty, and besides, the pig likes it. – George Bernard Shaw

There will always be people who mistreat you, and while in the moment the best action may feel like giving them a piece of your mind but that’ll only work against you. By all means don’t let people walk all over you, but reframe from stooping down to their level. Rather, learn to treat them with respect, walk away or learn how to disarm someone that is negative towards you. Most of the time it has nothing to do with you.

You are the master of your emotions. You can react to everything, or continue about your day. The choice is always yours

Do The Things You’re Afraid Of

When issues arise don’t waste time thinking about whether you should do it now or tackle it later. To make something new happen you must be willing to leave your comfort zone. Make that cold call your afraid of. Pitch that company.

Growth does not come from the path of least resistance, but going in the difficult direction that challenges you and ask for more out of you. When you do the things you fear, you widen the gap from those that procrastinate and let fear paralyze them. You build mental strength and hard decisions become easier to make.

Go Your Own Direction

Something I love to say is, life is about growth. You’re either standing still, going the direction as everyone else, or creating your own path. You must have the resolve to take your own path and never quit until you get there, even if no one is willing to follow you, you must be willing to follow yourself.

A great example of this would be from Iron man Elon Musk. Imagine the blockades he had to go through with SpaceX, the many failures and almost losing all his money. Not many people followed him, but he won them over and now everyone is cheering for him and want to see how far he will go.

You have the power to control what life throws your way, but you must hold yourself accountable. You are responsible for your life, the actions you take, and how you act. Mental strength is a must if you wish to get far in life, and like lot of things, its possible to build on it if you don’t have it.
