Productivity is a measure of the amount of positive results achieved through hard work and determination. It is a challenge to keep up your productivity levels and achieve success, but it is far from impossible. Here I have put together a list of the tips that I have found to be most important throughout my journey to reach my goals.
- Don’t Tackle Too Many Tasks at Once
It’s good to set big goals for yourself and strive to achieve them, but don’t overdo it! If I try to fit too many tasks into one day I might not always be able to complete all of them and then I just end up feeling unaccomplished and down.
It may also make you feel like you need to rush through all your tasks to get everything done, causing you to make mistakes and decrease the quality of your work.
Limit yourself to a reasonable amount of tasks to complete in the amount of time you have set aside. If you complete those and still have time to work you can always add on more tasks. I promise you will feel much more accomplished and productive!
- Take Breaks
If you work yourself too hard it will become more and more difficult to focus on your assignments and your work will become sloppy.
It is important to take a break from working, relax, and clear your mind. You will find that, if you do so, you can work much more efficiently, be more productive, and keep your sanity!
A break doesn’t have to mean spending hours away from your work on recreational activities. A break can be as simple as going for a short walk or, if you are working at a computer, even just looking away from the screen for a couple minutes to rest your eyes and take a breather.
- Turn Off Distractions!
Unless your work requires you to use your computer or cellphone, it is best to turn these things off. Along with the TV and anything else that might be a distraction to you.
It is very easy to let your mind be constantly caught up in something more fun than what you’re working on. This will result in the work not getting done in a timely manner.
In addition, some people keep jumping back and forth between working and playing, making it difficult to accomplish anything because you fall out of the flow of things, your mind becomes unfocused, and you lose sight of what you were trying to accomplish in the first place.
It is best that you just turn all of your distractions off until you are finished working OR you can spend a limited amount of time with them on your work breaks.
You should also make sure other people aren’t distracting you. Recognize the importance of your own needs and don’t let other people walk all over you just because they are trying to fulfill their needs. Learn how to say no to others as you learn how to value yourself and the time you need to spend working on your own things.
- Make a To-Do List
Organization is a key part of being more productive. One of my favorite ways to organize my daily activities is to make to-do lists. Before you start your day or maybe even the night before, make a list of the things you want to accomplish that day.
Having a list of things designated for that day helps you organize your goals and remember them. Plus, I find that if I can visually watch my daily goals being reached, I feel more like I am accomplishing something.
- Stay Organized
Not only should you keep your tasks organized with to-do lists, but you should also keep your work surroundings organized and clean.
I find it difficult to keep my mind focused and productive when my surroundings are chaos. A messy work space results in a messy job done. So, keep your stuff straight and it will help you keep your thoughts straight.
- Start Important Tasks Early
Try to get those big tasks done early on in the day instead of putting them off, saying that you can do them later. This will weigh down your whole day because you will be thinking about that important job you need to finish later.
Also, if you put it off until the end of the day, it is likely you will end up not being able to get it done that day at all. Starting early increases your chances of completing your goals.
Obviously it is important to not procrastinate your duties in general, but a common mistake made is to procrastinate all those little jobs with the thought that “oh, I can just do that later, it will be easy.” This is flawed thinking because these “small tasks” begin to build up and become overwhelming, or they get forgotten completely.
If there is a job that can be done in just a couple minutes or less, just do it right away. It is for the best to get it over with while it is fresh in your mind so that it doesn’t become a problem later.
Don’t forget how important sleep is for your body and brain to be able to function properly and to its fullest capacity.
If you are too tired, your productivity will drastically slow down and you will start getting sloppy in your work. Lack of sleep is also damaging to one’s health and being sick slows down your body and mind as well.
Having a regular exercise routine is also extremely important for keeping up your productivity levels.
Exercise is important for staying healthy and, in turn, staying fit for working. It also boosts your energy and improves your mood so that you can work harder and stay positive and focused. People that exercise sleep better, allowing them to function efficiently as previously discussed.
- Start Your Day by Taking Care of Yourself
First thing in the morning, make a point of taking the time to do whatever it is you enjoy doing to prepare yourself for the day. Forget about your work, checking your email, whatever is stressing you out, and just focus on yourself.
This could mean just taking a nice warm shower, cooking yourself a thoughtful breakfast, putting on makeup, or dressing nicely. Just do something to brighten your mood and increase your self-confidence.
These small acts are important for setting a positive mood for the rest of the day and, therefore, increasing your productivity throughout that day.
- Keep Pictures of Loved Ones
This is one I personally love because my loved ones are a very important part of my life. I want to make them proud of me and become deserving of their love and appreciation. So, keeping a reminder of them close to me as I work keeps me motivated to work hard and achieve my goals.
- Live in the Now
This is very important to remember. Stop waiting around for there to be an appropriate time or place to do certain things. If you think this way, you will often be waiting around for the rest of your life. Act now and make time for those things you want or need to do.
I can guarantee that there will never be an absolutely perfect time to do anything so you just have to make it happen.
